How We’ve Evolved Since Filming ‘Inside The Factory’

4th December 2020

Innovation

It’s been over 18 months since Gregg Wallace and Cherry Healy visited Harrison Spinks to film the BBC’s ‘Inside The Factory’ documentary. After three days of filming our team go about their craft, the episode was aired on 20th August 2019 for the world to see all the dedication and time-honoured skill that goes into every Harrison Spinks mattress.

Since then, things have been constantly evolving at Harrison Spinks, testament to our innovative approach that underpins everything we do. From new, ground-breaking spring technology to establishing ourselves as world leaders in sustainable comfort innovation,

100% Recyclable and Glue-Free CortecTM Spring System

The biggest change since the filming of ‘Inside The Factory’ in 2019 is found at the heart of our mattresses, with a new core unit that is truly changing the way the world sleeps. CortecTM spring technology has been years in the making, with our Development team obsessing over every detail and pushing our machines to the limit to produce glue-free, 100% recyclable spring technology.

Fast forward 18 months from ‘Inside The Factory’, and Harrison Spinks are proud to have brought CortecTM to our mattress ranges. A heat-sealed, pocket spring system, the spring unit is completely glue-free and can be 100% recycled at the end of a mattress’s life, ensuring zero-to-landfill.

Harrison Spinks have always been industry leaders in creating the latest spring technology, but CortecTM is by far our most innovative and sustainable mattress spring system yet. Combine to that the usual comfort and support of a Harrison Spinks manufactured spring unit, and our new technology is something we are excited to roll our across our ranges.

All 2021 Harrison Spinks and Somnus collection mattresses will have CortecTM at the heart meaning you can sleep comfortably whilst knowing your mattress can be fully recycled at the end of its life and not end up going to landfill.

Committing To a Foam-Free Future

The benefits of CortecTM do not stop at its 100% recyclable, glue-free technology. The flexible yet durable nature of the spring system removes the need for additional foam in mattresses using CortecTM. This allows the mattress to be rolled for easier delivery and transport, as well as meaning no harmful foam-based products are being used.

Committing to a foam-free future with CortecTM has been vital in Harrison Spinks becoming the world’s most sustainable mattress manufacturer.

In-House FR Chemical-Free Ticking

Our sustainability story wouldn't be complete if we didn't take the time to carefully produce our own in-house woven mattress ticking.

We've been weaving our own ticking in-house for some time now, but our latest product contains a large amount of wool, a naturally fire retardant material that means no FR chemicals are used to make our ticking. By removing the need for any FR chemicals to treat our mattresses, we can ensure the highest standards of safety whilst also creating a beautifully soft, natural sleep surface for a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable sleep.

Achieving Carbon Neutral+ Status

In 2020, Harrison Spinks were awarded Carbon Neutral+ for our efforts in working with the planet, and not against it.

Being awarded Carbon Neutral+ means that we are going above and beyond to limit our carbon emissions and are actively reducing them at every opportunity.

Every year, Harrison Spinks grows almost 800 tonnes of natural fibre fillings for its mattresses. By farming its own materials and manufacturing its own components, we have been able to save more than 1,300 tonnes of CO2 every year.

New and Improved Harrison Spinks Collection

Throughout the ‘Inside The Factory’ documentary, Gregg Wallace learnt from the very best in the business. Whether it’s Gary intricately side-stitching the mattress border or Mickey showing the steady hand needed to tape edge the corners, every Harrison Spinks mattress is made using time-honoured techniques.

Whilst the Emerald 14000 mattress showcased in ‘Inside The Factory’ is shortly to be discontinued in the new year, there are plenty of alternatives that have the same handcrafted, quality finish with the additional sustainable benefits of being completely glue-free, foam-free and FR chemical-free.

In January 2021, we are launching the new Harrison Spinks seasonal turn range, the same family of beds that the Emerald 14,000 belongs to currently.
