Guides & Advice
September, or as it is known in the sleep industry – Sleeptember, is an initiative specifically designed by the Sleep Council to raise awareness of the importance of sleep. At Harrison, we understand the importance of a good night’s sleep, and have supported Sleeptember this month on our social media, that’s why we’re providing tips to get the best night’s sleep.
The important task of achieving a better night’s sleep can be pretty simple if you know how, we’ve come up with 5 tips to get the best night’s sleep:
Regular Sleeping Pattern: Going to sleep and getting up at the same time every day will get yourself into a sleep routine. This will help set your internal body clock and make falling asleep much easier whilst also enhancing the quality of your sleep. Avoid over napping too, as this can hinder you drifting off to sleep at night.
Frequent Exercise: An easy 10 minutes of exercise a day helps you fall asleep quicker, as well as improving the quality of sleep by increasing the amount of time you spend in the deep REM stages of sleep. Exercisers may reduce their risk of developing troublesome sleep disorders such as restless leg syndrome.
Clever about what you eat and drink: Try and avoid going to bed too full or empty as, this may cause discomfort and keep you up. Nicotine and caffeine should be avoided before bed time too – the stimulating effects these have can take hours to wear off. Whilst alcohol may leave you feeling sleepy, it can actually keep you up later in the night, which is why the Sleep Council recommend you avoid alcohol in order to get a good night’s sleep.
Winding-down: Make time to relax before you get into bed. The more stimulated your brain is, the harder it can be to slow down and fall asleep at night. Simple relaxation techniques such as reading a book or listening to calming music will guarantee your head is in the right place to fall asleep.
Re-evaluate your sleeping environment: Make sure your bedroom is the perfect sanctuary to get the best night’s sleep. This will involve getting your room the right temperature and keeping noise to a minimum. We believe one of the most important factors which can help you achieve a restful night’s sleep is the perfect bed; a bed where you have enough room to stretch out and one which provides the perfect level of support for you.
We understand that everyone has different requirements for their bed and that’s why at Harrison there’s no such thing as a standard bed. Every Harrison mattress is handmade to order and designed around you. Our mattresses are available in three levels of support and a range of standard and bespoke sizes, helping you achieve the best night’s sleep, every night of the week.
