Making your bed on a morning may seem like a simple task. However, if like many of us you find it all too easy to skip this part of your morning routine in favour of an extra 5 minutes in bed, you could be underestimating the benefits fluffing up the pillows and straightening the sheets could have on the rest of your day. We’ve put together a list of some of the most worthwhile reasons that might just give you that little bit extra motivation to make your bed tomorrow morning.

1. You’ll be starting your day as you mean to go on

Starting your day by making your bed will give you an early sense of accomplishment that can kick start a positive chain of productivity throughout the rest of your day. US Navy Admiral William McRaven, author of New York Times bestseller “Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life…and Maybe the World” explained the benefits he learnt from completing this seemingly small task every day during his time in the Navy. He said “It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task, and another, and another. And by the end of the day that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed.”

2. You may find yourself adopting better everyday habits

Once you start consistently making your bed on a morning, you may find that other good habits will not only follow, but will also be easier to maintain. Making your bed is a step in the right direction to accomplishing many other small tasks such as picking up clothes from the floor and keeping your dresser tidy. Theses daily habits will teach you self-discipline and help you keep a tidy home.

3. Your bedding will look newer for longer

It’s no surprise that by avoiding leaving your bedding screwed up at the bottom of your bed or cushions on the bedroom floor, you will be able to keep these looking newer for longer. Smoothing out your bed sheets will help to lessen wrinkling, while fluffing up your pillows daily will prevent them from losing their shape as the fillings become flattened.

4. You may get a better night’s sleep

We all know there’s no better feeling than climbing into a fresh, perfectly made bed after a long day, but studies have shown that making your bed on a morning can actually improve your sleep. The renowned National Sleep Foundation (NSF) have identified a possible correlation between making your bed and enjoying better quality sleep, with those who make their bed every day reporting better sleep than those who rarely or never make their bed. This could be because those who do find it easier to relax, which brings us onto our next point…

5. It can improve your mood and minimise stress

Making your bed is a simple way to declutter your bedroom and turn this into your own relaxing sanctuary. A tidy space goes a long way for a tidy mind, and being able to come home to an organised bedroom will help you escape from any chaos in your day.

6. It’s an easy way to spruce up your bedroom

Making your bed on a morning is an instant way to give your bedroom a boost, especially when you incorporate cushions and throws to add texture and colour. Whilst you may be in a rush on a morning or short of time to style your bed to perfection, casually draping blankets or scattering a few cushions can make all the difference to your bed making routine, and ensure you are always prepared for unexpected guests!
